Nat Bio Dermalume 2X handheld phototherapy
Dermalume 2X • Narrowband UVB

1. Device Overview

Dermalume 2X is a handheld narrowband UVB phototherapy device for home use. It includes a locking wand, snap-on scalp comb, and a Digital Timer (DT) controller for time-based treatments. Use only under the direction of a physician.

2. Indications for Use

For physician-directed treatment of photoresponsive skin disorders including psoriasis and vitiligo. Not for cosmetic tanning.

3. Warnings & Safety

  • Prescription use only. Follow your physician’s schedule. Never treat more than once in 24 hours unless directed.
  • Eye protection required: wear UV-blocking goggles throughout exposure.
  • Cover all skin not being treated. Some medicines/cosmetics/foods increase photosensitivity.
  • Use indoors on a stable surface; keep away from children/pets; do not use near water or in high humidity.
  • Provide airflow: keep ~4–6 in (10–15 cm) clearance around vents.
  • Unplug before cleaning or lamp changes. Do not operate if damaged.

4. Site, Power & Setup

  • Power: connect to a grounded 120 VAC, 60 Hz outlet (0.40 A). Use a dedicated, properly grounded 15–20 A circuit.
  • Operating conditions: 60–100 °F (16–38 °C), dry room (IPX0). Avoid EMI sources (RFID, scanners, mobiles).
  • Unpack & assemble: unfold wand to a comfortable, locked angle; attach comb by sliding ribs into slots until it snaps.

5. Positioning & Comb Distance

  • Place the wand near but not touching the skin; keep the entire treatment area at a uniform distance from the lamps.
  • For scalp and short-distance use, rest the comb teeth on the skin—the tips equal the ideal distance.
  • Avoid relying only on the comb for narrow or curved areas (e.g., forearms), which can bring lamps too close at the center.

6. Operating Instructions (Digital Timer)

  1. Unlock: press any button → display shows C0dE → press ▲ repeatedly to enter 0007 → press PLAY/PAUSE.
  2. Set time (mm:ss): ▲ increases the flashing digit; ◄ moves left. Press PLAY/PAUSE to lock.
  3. Start: press PLAY/PAUSE. Press again to pause; press CANCEL (while paused) to end.
  4. Standby/Repeat: after completion, the last time flashes in standby. Press PLAY/PAUSE to re-enter and start the same time.
  5. Notes: enter 1:00 (not 0:60). If power fails, elapsed time isn’t remembered and an exposure may be deducted.

7. Treatment Protocols

A. Vitiligo (treat as Skin Type I)

  • Distance: at end of comb.
  • Initial time: 70% of MED; if MED unknown, start at 26 seconds.
  • Increase: +10% each session unless erythema occurs.
  • If erythema: hold; if it persists, reduce by 25%, then increase by 5% per session once resolved.
  • Frequency: 3× per week until repigmentation.

B. Psoriasis (end of comb)

Skin TypeInitial Dose (mJ/cm²)Initial Time
I1300:26
II2200:44
III2600:52
IV3301:06
V3501:10
VI4001:20

Increase schedule (per session, if no erythema): Type I +3s; II +5s; III +8s; IV +9s; V +12s; VI +13s. If mild pinkening → repeat same dose; if severe erythema → hold; when resolved, resume at 50% of first dose then increase by ≤10%.

Missed days: 8–11 repeat previous; 12–14 subtract 2 treatments; 15–20 −25%; 21–27 −50%; ≥28 restart.

8. Cleaning, Maintenance & Lamps

  • Unplug first. Wipe lamps/reflectors with a soft cloth and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Clean plastic with mild detergent (no alcohol on clear shields). Avoid abrasive cleaners and dry wiping.
  • Lamp life & replacement: replace every ~100 hours and replace both lamps together to avoid uneven output. Lamps contain mercury—handle with gloves and recycle properly.
  • Specs (ref): Max timer setting typically 10 min; ~250 pre-loaded treatments; device keeps lamp hours.

9. Troubleshooting & Refills

  • Won’t unlock? Use key code 0007 (▲×7 then PLAY/PAUSE).
  • Refills (exposure-limited units): Unlock → press CANCEL + ◄ + PLAY/PAUSE → when “—1” shows, press ▲ four times to “—5” → PLAY/PAUSE to enter Menu 5 → note Device Code CXXX. Give this to your prescriber to receive a 4-digit refill code via the physician portal.
  • Power lost during treatment? Time is not remembered and one exposure may be deducted; consult your schedule before restarting.
