When Your Device Is No Longer Needed

Important Notice: Phothera does not operate a device take-back program. Devices cannot be returned to Phothera for disposal, and the company does not recommend resale of used devices.

Safe Disposal Procedures

Electronic Waste Requirements: Your Phothera phototherapy device contains electrical and electronic components that require special disposal procedures. These devices cannot be disposed of with regular household garbage.

Identification of Electronic Waste: Your device is marked with the "No Waste" symbol - a crossed-out garbage bin. This symbol indicates that the device must be disposed of as electronic waste according to local regulations.

Step-by-Step Disposal Process:

  1. Contact Local Authorities:
    • Contact your local waste management authority to learn about electronic waste disposal options
    • Many communities have designated electronic recycling centers
    • Some areas offer special collection days for electronic waste
  2. Prepare Your Device:
    • Ensure the device is unplugged and powered off
    • Remove any personal treatment records or data
    • Clean the device according to normal maintenance procedures
    • Keep all original accessories together with the device
  3. Follow Local Regulations:
    • All applicable rules and regulations of your country and local area must be followed
    • Different regions may have specific requirements for medical device disposal
    • Some areas may require special handling due to the medical nature of the device

Environmental Considerations

Why Proper Disposal Matters:

  • Prevents harmful materials from entering the environment
  • Allows valuable materials to be recovered through recycling
  • Complies with environmental protection laws
  • Protects community health and safety

Materials Recovery: Electronic waste recycling centers can properly handle:

  • Electrical components and circuit boards
  • Metal components for recycling
  • Plastic housing materials
  • UV lamps (which require special handling)

What NOT to Do

Do Not:

  • Throw the device in regular household garbage
  • Attempt to disassemble the device yourself
  • Try to return the device to Phothera
  • Sell or give the device to another person without proper authorization
  • Dispose of the device in regular recycling bins

Important Safety Note: UV lamps in phototherapy devices require special handling due to their electronic components and potential mercury content. Never attempt to remove or dispose of lamps yourself.

Documentation and Records

Before Disposal:

  • Remove or securely delete any treatment history stored on the device
  • Keep records of your treatment for your healthcare provider
  • Note the disposal date and method for your records
  • Ensure any USB drives or memory devices are removed

International Considerations

For International Users:

  • Disposal requirements vary by country
  • European Union countries follow WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive
  • Contact local environmental authorities for specific requirements
  • Some countries may have medical device-specific disposal requirements

Frequently Asked Questions - Device Disposal

A: No, Phothera does not operate a take-back program. You are responsible for proper disposal through local electronic waste facilities.

Q: Can I sell my used device to another patient?

A: Phothera does not recommend resale of used devices. Medical devices require proper prescription and setup for safe use.

Q: What if I move to a different area while using my device?

A: You can continue using your device in your new location, but make sure the electrical requirements on your machine’s label match the electricity at the new location (e.g., some of our 120V devices (100, 600, etc.) are not compatible with EU wall outlets).
